The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Nockberge
Majestic, mighty, and unique – the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Carinthian Nockberge is an alpine jewel with unique natural treasures, a diverse cultural landscape, and rare animal and plant species. For centuries, people here have lived in harmony with nature. Gently rolling with peaks over 2400 meters and picturesque alpine meadows – the Biosphere Reserve Carinthian Nockberge is a rare natural idyll in the middle of the Austrian Alps covering an area of about 500 square kilometers.
In 2012, it was designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. The park is based on the three pillars of sustainability: ecological balance, economic security, and social justice. Here people live in harmony with nature and the rare animal and plant world is respectfully valued and appreciated.
Regional products, processed according to old traditions, testify to careful work following handed-down recipes. Trained biosphere reserve rangers promise unforgettable tours for families, and in several educational programs, this knowledge is also passed on to pupils. Whatever the season, a visit to the biosphere reserve always offers a treasure trove of experiences.

Even the last day begins with a mountain ride: you take the "Falkertlift" up to just below the Falkertköpfl (2,197 m). From there, you head towards Hundsfeldscharte where a short descent begins. It is also possible here to still climb the Falkert, from where you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Hohe Tauern, Dachstein, and Julian Alps on a clear day. Now you can directly descend into the northwest flank of Falkert and swing down to the valley floor by the Hundsfeldhütte (1,900 m). Further north, from the Falkertköpfl, there are nice descent options depending on the snow conditions.
From the Hundsfeldhütte, the route no longer continues as before towards the Lärchenhütte or Falkerthaus due to a route change decided for visitor management within the Nockberge Biosphere Reserve. After the Hundsfeldhütte, you go a few meters out of the Hundsfeldgraben before reaching the forest road, then head uphill again in a northeast direction to the Steinalmhütte and further on to Klomnock (2,331 m). From there, it continues along the ridge to the imposing summit of Mallnock (2,228 m) and then awaits a crowning finish with an endless ski descent down to Bad Kleinkirchheim! First, you swing across the gentle southwest flank of Mallnock to the top station of the Brunnachbahn. From here, a ski trail leads northwest into the notch, and then for the last time, you take a mountain lift, the Wiesernockbahn (4-seater chairlift), uphill to Wiesernock (1,974 m). Now you descend on the Höhenabfahrt (No. 18) to Priedröfabfahrt (No. 17) and continuously keep right towards Sonnwiesenabfahrt (No. 13 or 13T), which takes you all the way down to Bad Kleinkirchheim. The goal of the Nockberge Trail is reached!
Option to abort in bad weather conditions:
Abort option via Falkerthaus: Simply follow the road down from Falkerthaus towards St. Oswald. At the end, you need to walk a few meters to the valley station of Brunnachbahn, from where ski buses run to Bad Kleinkirchheim.
