A journey into the Early Middle Ages – with the Church and Museum of St. Proculus

Near the eastern entrance to Naturns, nestled among the extensive apple orchards of the valley floor, lies the small Church of St. Proculus.

From the outside, the modest building gives little indication of the remarkable artistic treasures hidden within. Opposite the church is the Proculus Museum, which is not immediately recognizable as such, as it is entirely underground and only the entrance portal is visible from the outside. The museum route leads visitors through four historical time periods, ranging from Late Antiquity and the Early and Late Middle Ages to the Thirty Years’ War and the devastating typhus epidemic. Among the highlights of the museum are the removed Gothic frescoes and numerous archaeological finds from St. Proculus Church.
