The fish-rich Kiantajärvi is also an intriguing destination for canoeing. Crossing the open waters of the lakes can be demanding in strong winds, but on calm days, the mind finds serenity amidst these landscapes. In windier conditions, you can meander through sheltered shores.
Kiantajärvi stretches 11 kilometers from north to south. Juurikkalahti, a charming bay on the western shore midway through the lake, offers a delightful spot to pause. Once part of the renowned Great Northern Route of the Karelians, dating back to medieval times, which traversed from Lake Ladoga through the waters of Pielinen to Sotkamo and onward to Oulu.
The route can be paddled in both directions, and you can integrate parts of it, for example, from the route around Sapsojärvi, or turn it into a two-day excursion, perhaps paddling to Sapsoperä.
From Juurikkalahti, you can venture towards Kiantaperä at the southern end of the lake or explore the shores and islands of the lake at your leisure.

Begin your journey from Sotkamo Marina. On the west side of the breakwater, you'll find an accessible canoe pier.
The route curves immediately under Hirvensilta bridge towards the Sapsojärvi side. Head towards the distant Kuolasalmi on the opposite shore. Pay attention to the direction of the wind and take advantage of sheltered shores.
After passing under the Kuolasalmi bridge, it's preferable to stay on the western shore. Towards the end of the journey, paddle past Selkäsaari island and Keinosensaari island before reaching the bay of Juurikkalahti.
Navigable close to the shoreline by canoe, kayak, and rowboat. Especially east of Hiukka beach, it's very shallow far from the shore.
