The Rabenauer Grund is worth a visit at any time of year. In winter, nature conjures up beautiful formations of snow and ice on the towering rocks in the valley of the Rote Weißeritz and in the course of the river itself, while the Weißeritz Valley Railway puffing past radiates a pleasant warmth.
This hike offers wonderful moments for young and old alike. Even from a distance, you can hear the steaming of the oldest narrow-gauge railroad in regular operation - an exciting moment. Nature enchants the Kerbtal valley into a bizarre winter landscape. At Rabenau station, the path leads towards the upper town via the new "Legendary Footpath" adventure trail. This is not just an experience for children, who can pick up a little surprise at the nearby German Chair Building Museum if they solve the "remember-what" memory game along the way. Tired feet can comfortably take the narrow-gauge railroad on the way back, while fit hikers can continue uphill to the Rabenauer Höhe. There, in addition to the newly designed confessional memorial and a refuge, you can enjoy the magnificent view over Freital and the Ore Mountains. Via the Eckersdorfer Weg, the route leads downhill back to Freital and the starting point.
For all those who are curious, the travel chronicler offers first insights into the tour on her blog with an experience report and a video of her own hike in the Rabenauer Grund in the fall.
The tour starts at the Freital-Coßmannsdorf stop on the Weißeritz Valley Railway or at the nearby hiking parking lot. The trail leads directly into the Rabenauer Grund along the Rote Weißeritz. Passing the cascades, which form an ice-covered spectacle in winter, and the hydroelectric power station, it is also on the ENSO Energy Experience Trail. The path winds its way through the valley, past information boards about the animal and plant inhabitants of this nature reserve, never completely losing sight of the tracks of the Weißeritz Valley Railway. The water of the Rote Weißeritz ripples past the path, sometimes wild, sometimes shallow. After approx. 5 km you reach the Rabenau mill and the Rabenau railroad station. The tracks are crossed and you briefly follow Bahnhofstraße to the left towards Oberstadt. The entrance portal to the "Sagenhafter Mühlberg" adventure trail can be seen from afar. Legendary figures provide insights into the very lively world of legends of the Rabenauer Grund and, as befits a chair-making town, there are some creative seating elements along the way. For children, there are play elements to master the sometimes very steep path and a "remember-what-memory" invites you to solve puzzles.
If you go straight ahead at the upper exit portal and then turn right onto Freitaler Straße, you will come to the market with the chair fountain, St. Egidien's Church and the post mile column. We recommend a visit to the German Chairmaking Museum in Rabenau, which exhibits Rabenau's traditional craft of chairmaking with all its facets of craftsmanship and an original machine room. The return journey is easy from Rabenau station on the Weißeritz Valley Railway.
If you turn left at Mühlberg, cross Freitaler Str. and walk uphill for a while on Hainsberger Straße, then left on Höhenstraße past the Hotel König Albert Höhe to the confessional monument. Afterwards, the trail leads back along Höhenstraße for a while and then takes a sharp left onto Hainsberger Straße. The route continues straight downhill with wonderful views over Freital on the Eckersdorfer Weg, past the former manor house. After the Rollmopsschänke pub, the footpath leads left downhill along Rabenauer Straße and then turns left onto Hainsberger Straße. The tracks of the narrow-gauge railroad come into view again and, after crossing them, the route then turns left again to the Coßmannsdorf railroad station, the starting point.
