This route uniquely combines Lake Constance, Schienerberg, and culture. Directly on the lake shore in Wangen is the Fischerhaus Museum, which recalls the pile dwelling UNESCO World Heritage hidden at the lakeshore of Lake Constance. The mayor of Wangen, Kaspar Löhle, was the first to discover remains of pile dwellings in Lake Constance in 1854. At the lakeshore, the reconstruction of a pile dwelling can be visited.
The hiking trail runs along the western south slope from Wangen to Öhningen-Kattenhorn with almost uninterrupted lake views. Worth visiting are the two Kattenhorn churches. In an old defensive tower of Kattenhorn Castle (the current castle is privately owned and not open for visits) is the Blasius Chapel from the 16th century. It uniquely combines Renaissance times with modernity. For literature enthusiasts: the writer Werner Dürrson lived in the corner house, whose small collection of poems "Kattenhorn Silence" is recommended for later reading. (Quote: "Here Germany dawns the most beautifully")
Now it is time to climb the Schienerberg via Schlossackerweg. Just right for a breather is the evangelical Petrus Church directly by the main road, with stained glass windows by Otto Dix. The path then leads uphill again after crossing the main road to Kattenhorn Bühl. The path through the nature reserve runs along the slope, with wide views of the landscape. The panorama route takes us to Aspenhof and further along the slope back to Wangen.
The wine taverns of Wangen now invite you to refresh yourself. At the Langasthof Auer, the legendary apple cake was already appreciated by Otto Dix. Directly on the lake shore, the lakeside terrace of the Residenz am See invites you to stay.
From the starting point Fischerhaus Museum, we walk about 1 km on the sidewalk along the main road and keep left from Pension Auer, first uphill, then down the Kattenhorn Steig to the Blasius Chapel in Kattenhorn. The chapel is on the left path down to the lake in the former defensive tower of the castle complex.
Further uphill on Schlossackerweg to the Petrus Church (open during the day, stained glass window designs by Otto Dix). There we cross main road L 192 and walk uphill to the water reservoir container, before following the grass-gravel path to the next cross path on the left.
On the now asphalted way, we go uphill again to the first well-signed hiking path that turns right. On this, we reach Aspenhof along the "Kattenhorn Bühl."
From Aspenhof, we follow the signs to Wangen. This road is only for residents and leads back to the starting point.
A stop at Kirchplatz or the harbor is recommended for refreshments.
Höribus 7368 from Radolfzell station or from Stein am Rhein Undertorparplatz.
Parking lot at the Fischerhaus Museum (Haupstraße, end of the village of Öhningen-Wangen towards Stein am Rhein)
The Petrus Church in Kattenhorn is open during the day until 6 p.m. in summer.
The Fischerhaus Museum and the reconstruction of a pile dwelling remind us that pile dwelling research at Lake Constance began here over 150 years ago. A must-visit!
