The town lies in the middle of an extinct volcanic mountain range, the Schemnitz Mountains. The river Štiavnica flows through the city and runs almost completely underground. Two mountains rise around the encircled town: Kalvária at 726 m and Sitno at 1009 m with attractive coniferous forests.
