Along the path, you will pass some signs with information about whetstone making. The highlight besides the numerous waterfalls is the restored whetstone mill at the beginning of the gorge.
Whetstone making has a tradition in Unterammergau. All around Unterammergau you can still find various quarries where stone has been mined for centuries. Until the 1960s, the last whetstone maker in Unterammergau – Schneiderla Toni – earned his living with this craft. Then he had to give up his trade. The mill slowly fell into decay until the "Historical Working Group" painstakingly restored the mill in the Schleifmühlklamm over 3 years with at least 3000 hours of work to put it back into operation.
Even today, the dedicated people of Unterammergau proudly show interested visitors the whetstone production. You can watch the voluntarily whetstone makers Georg Simon and Martin Hohenleitner at work every second Saturday of the month from May to September and join a guided tour in the whetstone mill.
The hike starts at the Pürschling car park in Unterammergau. From there, the path takes you along the Schleifmühlenlaine through the Schleifmühlklamm. Passing the former grinding mills, you walk over several stairs and footbridges always following the main path to the worth seeing waterfalls.
You can also reach the whetstone quarries via the Schleifmühlenlaine, which are one of Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes.
The well-maintained forest road leads you back to the starting point on the left.
The path, which is situated in the shade, is often damp – sturdy footwear is therefore recommended.
