Was it the taverns? Or the Wetterstein mountains with the Zugspitze? Maybe the view of the Murnau Moos? The manageability of the place as opposed to big cities like Berlin, Budapest, or Vienna? The parents' villa? The experiences in town? The glass painter Heinrich Rambold? The encounters with the painter Gabriele Münter? The summer and winter sports opportunities? Why was the town for Ödön von Horváth for almost ten years not only a place to live but also a source of inspiration? Why are Horváth's works still so topical today?
Discover the answers on this circular route. It leads to scenic viewpoints, lets you explore buildings and inns with special history, and shows you unusual sides of the town of Murnau. Along the walk you will learn a lot about the writer, his works, and his connection to Murnau experiences, personalities, and events.
You start at the town hall in the pedestrian zone and walk up the Untermarkt. When you reach the Obermarkt, turn left onto Griesbräustraße. Bahnhofstraße leads you left to the Ödön von Horváth-Platz in front of the Culture and Conference Center. Here you go right and later left through the Culture Park. At the end, follow the signs to "Münter Haus". You then cross the railway tracks for the first time. Further on, turning right you cross again. Then turn left onto the street "Am Dünaberg". Turn left twice onto Elblwiesweg. A footpath leads you right across the railway tracks again. You reach Kottmüllerallee and turn left towards Münter-Haus. Above Münter-Haus, continue on the footpath. You already know this section. You cross the railway tracks again and now do not go left through Culture Park, but take the park path and then to the right down the Burggraben. Then turn into Schlossergasse and then you are back at Untermarkt. The street leads you left back to the starting point.
