Passau: City hiking route from nature to culture

Starting point of the three-river city at the Danube, Inn, and Ilz is the Italian Baroque St. Stephen's Cathedral, which houses the largest cathedral organ in the world with almost 18,000 pipes. This cathedral is the largest building by Italian masters north of the Alps. The route continues via the New Episcopal Residence, where a magnificent Rococo staircase can be admired. Over the Residenzplatz, the path leads to the Rathausplatz. In the town hall halls, large historical paintings tell of the city history and the Nibelungenlied. Via Römerplatz and the hanging bridge, one enters the defensive walkway up to the fortress complex Veste Oberhaus. In the former castle, where the prince-bishops resided as territorial lords of the spiritual Passau principality, is the Oberhaus Museum. From Oberhaus, a hiking trail leads downhill to the valley along the Ilz, reaching the former county Hals, which once lay in the middle of the Passau principality. Around the Hals castle ruins winds the romantic Ilz. In Hals, you cross the Ilz bridge and return along the northern Ilz riverbank to the old town of Passau to Rathausplatz.
