Schmelz/Inzell – Fahrriesboden Chapel – Knappensteig – Streicher 1,594 m – Inzell Ski Hut – Kienberg Alm – Kienberg Service Hut – Keitl Alm – Sackgraben Alm – Allinger Stube – Taubensee – SalzAlpenSteig – Fahrriesboden Chapel – Schmelz/Inzell Attention: The Rauschbergbahn is out of service indefinitely. The mountain guesthouse Rauschberghaus is also closed. Don't forget summit snacks and drinks! Those surefooted who like to hike on quiet and less frequented paths are right here! From the hiking car park at the Gasthof Schmelz past the Fahrriesboden Chapel, which is dedicated to the patron saint of miners, Saint Barbara. Today, only names like the Knappensteig bear witness to the long-gone mining era. From 1585 to 1826, mining was a lucrative source of income for Ruhpolding. Lead and galena were extracted from countless tunnels with holy names like Dreifaltigkeitsstollen, Maria-Empfängnis-Stollen, and Nepomukstollen. When the raw materials slowly ran out, many private entrepreneurs tried their often futile luck in mining. For safety reasons, the tunnel entrances were permanently sealed in 1969 and the history of lead and zinc mining in Ruhpolding ended. On the steep path through Aschgrün to Streicher, the mining area with the dramatically sounding name Ewiggang is passed. At the summit of Streicher at 1,594 m, a 360-degree panorama opens up over the Bavarian Sea (Chiemsee) and around 600 Alpine peaks. Over open alpine meadows and past the Kienberg Alms, the narrow path enters the dense mountain forest and again frees the hiker at the Keitl Alm. Here is the only opportunity to rest on the tour, and the typical alpine snacks become a feast for the hungry hiker. Continue over the Sackgrabenalm and Allinger Stube to the idyllic Taubensee. One last short piece uphill and then along the SalzAlpenSteig back to the starting point.
By car on the B305 from Ruhpolding towards Inzell to the hiking car park in Schmelz.
By regional train from Traunstein to Ruhpolding.
In Ruhpolding, with the village line or the RVO bus (Regionalverkehr Oberbayern).
Inzell
If 20 km is too far, you can shorten the route from Ruhpolding with the RVO bus (RegionalVerkehr Oberbayern www.dbregiobus-bayern.de) and save almost 7 km and a good 2 hours of walking time. The travel time from the Ortnerhof/Abzw. Rauschbergbahn stop (Ruhpolding) to Schmelz (Inzell) is 9 minutes and the service runs approximately every 1 to 2 hours.
The name of the district and guesthouse “Schmelz” comes from smelting for metal extraction and is a former mining settlement.
The Holzknechtmuseum (Laubau/Ruhpolding) offers fascinating insights into the arduous life and dangerous work of the woodcutters (foresters, forestry workers) in the former Traunstein saltworks area. On the large open-air site, one feels transported back to a long-gone era in the lovingly restored wooden rooms, the original workshops, and through interactive stations. www.holzknechtmuseum.com
