The route starts from the parking lot at Ettaler Mühle in Ettal.
The Graswang valley is one of the most snow-sure cross-country skiing areas in the Bavarian Alps. From December to March, the sun rarely appears. The bed of the Ammer is dry during the winter because the spring streams collect in the Ettaler Mühlbach. Its water powered a sawmill of the Ettal Monastery for almost 300 years.
Below the south-facing steep slope of the Sonnenberg, which stays white only a few days even in snowy winters, the trail goes past the Rahmbauern farms towards Graswang. The snow on the opposite slopes, however, remains until spring.
From Graswang, the hike follows the Kohlbachweg through the winter fairy tale forest to the castle of King Ludwig II. From here you can return by bus to Oberammergau.
Please do not enter the winter protection areas!
The hike starts at Ettaler Mühle in Ettal.
In the Weidmoos nature reserve, take the Sonnenweg to the right towards Linderhof. The path first passes the Rahmbauern farms and Graswang (with places to eat) and continues along the Kohlbachweg.
Gently ascending, the hiking trail takes you through the forest until you finally reach the park of Linderhof Castle. You can return alternatively by bus. Duration approx. 3.5 hours (one way only)
