The water from the Augenquelle is said to heal and alleviate eye diseases. In the past, babies and toddlers with illnesses or disabilities were also washed with the water. The water always has a constant temperature because it comes from deep within the earth. It has been tested and found to be of the best drinking water quality. The well house was Grieselstein’s first elevated reservoir. Water was pumped from a spring into the elevated reservoir and from there it was distributed to the households. Today, however, the well house is no longer in use because the tap water for Grieselstein comes from the Lafnitz and Raab valleys. The Steinberg of Grieselstein, a volcanic cone, is colloquially called “Stoagupf” and is one of the oldest settlement areas in Burgenland. Finds of pottery shards indicate a Neolithic settlement as well as a medieval structure from the 13th-14th centuries. Due to the extraction of volcanic rock at the beginning of the 20th century, a large part of the site was destroyed. Today, the entire area is a protected monument.
