Albert, History and Nature

Accessible to all, this 6.5-kilometer trail invites you to stroll through streets full of memories while enjoying the softness of the green spaces along the river.
Along this walk, you will explore the rich heritage of Albert, deeply marked by the Great War. The route starts by leaving the historic center. The path runs along the banks of the Ancre, offering a natural breath in the heart of the city. Between public gardens, small flowered bridges, and wetlands, walkers might be lucky to spot herons, water hens, or dragonflies. After touring the velodrome pond, you return to civilization: the imposing town hall listed as a historical monument testifies to the architecture of reconstruction, and the majestic Basilica of Notre-Dame de Brebières stands out, a masterpiece of sacred art rebuilt after 1918. Your route will then take you to the Somme 1916 Museum, located in a former underground air-raid shelter, for a moving immersion into the local history of the Great War.
