Canoe route Lahn from Limburg to Laurenburg

The entry and exit point Limburg boat slip facility is located on the right bank of the Lahn near the motorway bridge. From here, you set off on the route from Limburg to the lower Lahn valley. You paddle into the cathedral city and bypass the Limburg weir in the lock on the right side of the Lahn. As with all further locks you will encounter downstream, the Limburg lock is operated by lock personnel. Caution, the flow velocity behind the lock is strong. 

Now you paddle towards the Oranien town of Diez and into Rhineland-Palatinate. High above the Lahn towers Oranienstein Castle. Passing the Diez campsite, you reach the Diez lock after about 7.5 kilometers. The lock is located on the right side of the Lahn. 500 m further on you will find a beautiful resting place for canoe hikers on the left riverbank. From here you can take a beautiful walk through the old town of Diez with its count's castle.

You are now in the romantic Nassau Nature Park and paddle past the mineral water resort Fachingen after a total of 11 kilometers. The Fachingen spring was discovered in 1740. Next, after some Lahn bends and another 4 kilometers, you reach the picturesque town of Balduinstein, which can be recognized by the Schaumburg high on the mountain. You will pass through the Cramberg lock on the right side of the Lahn one kilometer later. 

Next come the village of Geilnau and the Scheid lock, also on the right side. Here you have already covered 21 kilometers of this stage. Now you paddle through the Cramberg Lahn bend. High above the Lahn, a viewing pavilion in the Gabelstein-Hölloch nature reserve greets you. The entry and exit point Laurenburg bridge is located on the right bank of the Lahn, directly at the road bridge. Time to relax and visit the village of Laurenburg with its castle of the same name.

Paddling is fun in any weather. Protect yourself in cool and damp weather with a water- and windproof jacket with hood.

In sunshine, the sun intensity is often underestimated because it feels pleasantly cool on the water. Protect yourself with a head covering against too much sunlight. Shoes don't have to be pretty, but must fit firmly. The best are lace-up, sports or special paddling shoes.

For storing spare clothes and valuables, waterproof barrels or dry bags are recommended. If you book your route through a canoe travel operator, they will provide them. Store your electronic devices only in waterproof containers!

The Lahn may not be navigated when the HWS (highest navigable water level) is reached! The HWS is a precursor to flooding. Current Lahn gauge levels can be found here. A brief explanation of gauge displays is compiled here.

Always wear life jackets when you are on the water, and especially ensure no child sits in the canoe without a life jacket.

If you are traveling with a canoe tour operator, make sure to get a detailed introduction to canoeing. Ask for a river description to take along on your trip. This description should provide information on all entry and exit points, rest and overnight stops, and special natural spaces marked on a map. You should also be briefed on the particular nature of the river. If you are traveling independently, obtain map material containing this essential information. Via B49 or A3 to Limburg.

The Limburg train station is 2 kilometers from the entry and exit point. From here, go via Hospital street, Graben street and Konrad-Kurzbold street to the old Lahn bridge. Cross the Lahn and go behind the lock into the lock path. Now stay by the Lahn bank until you reach the entry and exit point Limburg boat slip facility behind the campsite. 

Alternatively, take the bus (LM-1) from Limburg station to the Seilerbahn/Parkbad stop. From here, it’s only 650 m to the entry and exit point. Walk down the street "Am Haustein" and then right onto the lock path.
