The herb hiking trail at Straßburg castle offers a fascinating hike through the idyllic landscape of Carinthia, especially aimed at nature lovers and those interested in medicinal herbs. This approximately 5-kilometer-long route starts and ends at the picturesque Straßburg castle, a historic building that is worth a visit in itself.
You start your short hiking route in front of the town hall in the city center. A short stretch goes north along the main square until you turn left onto Schlossweg at the end of the square. Slightly and steadily ascending, you reach the Maria Loretto chapel, a sacred building constructed in 1315 and remodeled in 1650. Here, you can take a first short break and enjoy the view over the rooftops of the city and beyond. Continue along the old access path to the castle – depending on the season, fragrant and colorful wild herbs grow between the joints of the ancient stone wall, guiding your way. In the upper part of the route, you pass through an avenue with stately walnut trees before arriving at the foot of the castle. Through the Bishop's Gate and the zwinger wall, you enter the outer courtyard of Straßburg castle and ascend a few steps into the impressive arcaded courtyard of the former bishop's residence. The exhibition “Straßburg – princely residence and bishop city” shows the roots of the Gurk church, the diocese of Gurk, as well as the formation of Straßburg. From the castle wall, you can let your gaze wander east to the Saualm and west deep into the Gurk valley.
Fresh herbs are used for cooking at the Pizzeria Al Castello, which you can taste while enjoying a wonderful view of the city. The small kitchen herb garden between the old castle walls smells delightful and evokes longing for the South.
The return route goes via the "Armen Sünder Stiege" and a shady, short forest path back to the city of Straßburg.
