La forteresse de Tournoux, ouvrage du 19e siècle, est la plus imposante construction militaire de la Vallée de l’Ubaye. Surnommée la Versailles militaire, elle se compose de plusieurs forts s’échelonnant sur 700 mètres de dénivelé.
Covering more than 56 hectares, it dominates and controls the confluence of two high valleys: the Ubayette, the road to the Col de Vars and the Durance.
The fortress was the key to defending the valley. In 1940, it took part in the Battle of the Alps, stopping Italian troops and serving as a base for the command posts that succeeded in retaking Saint-Ours and Roche la Croix from the Germans.
