The first kilometer leads uphill at a constant gradient (10%) on a long straight, partly in the shade. This is followed by two hairpin bends and the second longer straight with a continued rhythmic ascent. The road flattens out for about 200m between hairpin bends 3 and 4 and offers (the only) chance to recover and, above all, catch your breath for the last, most demanding kilometer.
At a maximum of 16% - often in direct sunlight - the basilica doesn't really want to come any closer. Directly below the basilica, the cul-de-sac turns off to the right and becomes even steeper. (Easy to ride) cobblestones provide additional resistance and are reminiscent of the great Belgian classic climbs. Fight - 200m to go!
In the narrow lane directly below the pilgrimage church, your lungs and thighs really burn until you reach the forecourt of the basilica. The 360° panoramic view of the Mostviertel and the Ybbstal Alps rewards you for your efforts on the climb.
(Road bike) with an appropriate climbing gear, e.g. 36-28
Caution on the descent! Steep gradient and please be considerate of pedestrians in the basilica area.
