Few historic monastic landscapes in Europe are as remarkably preserved as the cultural landscape around Zwettl Abbey. Johnny Berger from ZWalk discovered the old pilgrimage path that takes us from the parish church in Zwettl, through the old town, along the Kamp river to the abbey. Although this route is not so tranquil, it is historically interesting. All the more magnificent when the baroque tower of the abbey appears, whose visit is very worthwhile. It is, after Stift Rein, the second oldest continuously active Cistercian monastery worldwide. After visiting the abbey, its farms, and the "old bridge," we walk past the monastic fish ponds and the Neumühle back to Zwettl.
We start at the parish church and pass the Hundertwasser fountain heading towards the Old Town Hall. To the right, we follow Hamerlingstraße and walk up to the roundabout. We walk along the bank of the Kamp past the Hussite Cross to the Bozen settlement, where the street then rises and leads us over the so-called Devil's Mountain. We follow the street over the bridge and turn right. Shortly after, we turn left into the forest path towards the abbey, on the so-called Hopfenbergweg. After visiting the abbey, the return path goes downhill in the direction of the fish ponds towards the weir. We cross the stream and take the forest path towards the Neumühle located on the bank of the Kamp, which belonged to the abbey. We follow the so-called Kuenringer path and turn right after the bridge onto the path back to Zwettl. We follow the signage back towards Traunerhäusl. Passing the archery range, it goes on to the district Oberhof and back to the parish church.
