Maria Anzbach is a pilgrimage site with a long history and impressive landscape. The first settlement can be traced back to the Bronze Age, and the place was first mentioned in documents in 998. At the renovated market square in the center of Maria Anzbach there is the inn "Zum Goldenen Löwen" operating since 1779, the old schoolhouse, and the Goldammer Museum. Karl Goldammer worked at the Academy of Applied Arts in Vienna and has held many exhibitions at home and abroad. His preferred motifs are city views, especially Venice. A highlight is the pilgrimage church "Maria Anzbach to the Mother of Mercy." In its cellar are the bones from the former cemetery. The first church was built in 1456. During the Turkish wars, the church was connected to the old smithy by an underground passage. In the south of the municipality lies the Kohlreithberg, from where one can enjoy a fabulous view of the Anzbachtal at the newly erected Millennium Cross. The ascent to this 516m high Vienna Woods summit is sometimes demanding but worth it. When hiking around Maria Anzbach, you are mostly in natural forest where beech and spruce dominate. The path partly leads through extensive pastures of the region's cattle and horse farms. Near the village of Hart, you encounter Roman-era burial mounds. The picturesque wayside shrine Red Cross invites you to rest and is located in front of the Lengbachtal.

The route starts at the market square in the center of Maria Anzbach. Here you find the inn "Zum Goldenen Löwen," the Goldammer Museum, and the pilgrimage church. A detour to the nearby Schönbeck mill via Schmiedgasse is worthwhile. You head west, through the churchyard, and over Schulweg into Schwabstraße. Here the blue marking towards Kohlreith "To the Millennium Cross" begins. Follow this road uphill. After about 400m, you pass under the Westbahn and turn left into Josef Schöffelstraße. At the end of this street, follow the blue marking into the forest. Through beech forest, partly steep, go uphill. At the end of the forest, you come to a junction which you cross straight ahead towards "To the Millennium Cross." You are now on the Kohlreithberg nature trail; here you go straight until you reach the summit. The last 150m is a small footpath. At the Millennium Cross, you have reached your destination. The view stretches from here into the Waldviertel and Weinviertel, but especially Maria Anzbach and Neulengbach with its castle show themselves at their best. Then you turn back until the junction. Here turn left. After a few meters, the blue marking points to Eichgraben. Follow this on the road to the Hart settlement. At the next crossroads turn right and from there follow the blue marking towards St. Christophen. After about 200m, turn right into the forest. Go straight ahead and pass a meadow with a view of Altlengbach. After another forest section, you come to Roman burial mounds and the "Red Cross," a picturesque small monument. Continue to the next junction where you turn right and then follow the green marking towards Maria Anzbach. Downhill over a narrow forest path. Then at Pameth, cross a short stretch of meadow and a country road, then back through the forest. When the path leads out of the woods again, you must cross the country road and walk a footpath to a wayside shrine, then a few meters further the green marking branches off right onto a gravel path – follow it. Passing the Tannenhof, after about 1 km you reach the residential area of Maria Anzbach on Rehgartenstraße. Past the former "Hotel zur Reichskrone" you reach Schwabstraße again, from where you return via the churchyard to the starting point.
