From the market square, head toward Markl. We recommend taking a detour to the recreation area, which features a skate park, asphalt curling, and an outdoor ice rink in the winter. In Markl, the trail takes you through a street lined with potato cellars (the cellars were built outside the village because the water table within the village was too high for cellars due to the Thaya and Thauabach rivers). You’ll now hike through the vast fields, enjoying wonderful views of the municipal area. Passing a biotope, you’ll reach the Mühlteich—a fish pond—via a side path about 1 km long. Continue on to Meires, where you can visit Austria’s only potato breeding station (advance registration required). Meires Castle can be toured in guided groups by prior appointment. The trail leads back to Windigsteig via the Rafingsberg.

Linz: A 7 toward Freistadt – B 310 to Freistadt – B 38 to Karlstift – B 41 to Schrems – B 2 to Sparbach; turn left here and take the L 8112 to Windigsteig
