Small Rundling Route

Our route starts in Lübeln, one of the largest Rundlinge with twelve well-preserved farms around the village square. One of the hall houses houses the Rundlingsmuseum, which presents life from 150 years ago in its spacious surroundings as an open-air museum. A very lively tour shows the life on the farms and in the gardens at that time. In the historic craft workshops, blacksmiths, bakers, or weavers work as they did then, and exhibitions provide you with plenty of additional information. In the museum's entrance hall there is also a small shop where Wendland artisans sell their works.

From Lübeln, go via Gühlitz, Naulitz, Schwiepke, and Püggen to Diahren, about 6.5 km away. After a village fire, part of Diahren was straightened in 1808, so it extends rather longitudinally. Several large four-post hall houses from the 18th and 19th centuries still stand around the village square and, together with the old oaks, shape the village image of Diahren. About 70 inhabitants live here.

The next stop of the small round route is Diahren's neighboring village Prießeck. This village was also destroyed once by a large fire, like many others. The main reason for the devastating fires was the thatched roofs with which houses were roofed at that time. The dried and bundled rye straw provided sure protection against rain and wind but often dried out in summer. Then a single spark was enough, and the roofs burned down within a very short time. Many inscription beams on the rebuilt houses still remind of these fire disasters today. When Prießeck was destroyed in this way in 1780, the relatively rare three-post hall houses were in fashion. Prießeck is therefore the only Rundling where you can still admire three of these rare buildings today.

A particularly beautiful Rundling is also found in Bussau. The village, with its unusually many listed steep gable houses from the 19th century, has an almost circular village square. A water mill from the 15th century, which has been out of operation since 1956, is located just outside the Rundling. The small church still has a medieval fieldstone church tower today. It was formerly also of great importance to people from the surrounding villages.

After about a 15-minute drive along meadows, fields, and through several other small villages, including Mammoißel, with a very beautiful Rundling, you reach Lensian next. Unusual for a Rundling village, here is a wide street cutting through the town. It is not a newly built street of today. It was already mentioned in records in the 18th century. When the southern half of the village was destroyed by fire in 1814, this street probably saved the remaining houses. Only about 30 years later, the second half also burned down, so the oldest houses of Lensian today are four hall houses and two barns dating from 1814.

Only a stone's throw from Lensian is Schreyahn, considered one of the most beautiful Rundlinge in Wendland. Besides its dense number of gable-posted four-post hall houses, Schreyahn stands out mainly for its compact village structure and the beautifully grown and well-maintained village square. Not only do people like it here; a pair of storks has also settled on one of the roofs and raises its young in a nest on an old chimney every year.

About 3 km north of Schreyahn lies Jabel, best reached via Güstritz. Here, too, you should make a stop on your route through the Rundlinge. After the northeastern part of the Rundling burned down in 1838, this part of the village was rebuilt as a street village. While the wedge-shaped Rundling structure on the western side of the village is still clearly visible, the other six farms are arranged side by side along the street. Jabel is thus a good example of changes in village structure after large fires.

The last Rundling of the round tour is found in Satemin. With about 20 four-post hall houses, Satemin is one of the largest Rundlinge in the area. The reason for the village's size is a large fire that destroyed the neighboring village Prilip in the 14th century. The destroyed houses were subsequently integrated into the Satemin Rundling. When the village burned down again around 1850, the houses were uniformly rebuilt within a few months. The village square is now covered with grass and oaks and surrounded by cobblestone-paved driveways.

Tired visitors have the opportunity here to refresh themselves with coffee and cake and let the impressions they gained sink in.

The return to the route starting point goes via Gühlitz. It is now only 4.9 km to Lübeln.

The total distance is 37.1 km. The pure driving time by car is about one hour.
