With climate-friendly energy through Göttingen

The starting point is at the UMG combined heat and power plant, which was commissioned in April 2018. Since then, it has supplied the UMG with electricity and heat, and due to its high efficiency (91%), about 6,500 tons of CO2 can be saved annually. It is located at the corner of Robert-Koch Street/Zimmermann Street, just behind the fire station at the hospital.

You start your bike route via Hermann-Rein Street, which takes you across Weende to the Weende sports hall. Here, solar heat is generated using a facade system covering 18 m². The system can be found at the rear exit of the sports hall.

Then continue towards Göttingen city center. Shortly before, turn right into Güterbahnhof Street. After passing under the railway tracks, you can get a view of the city utility biomass heating center of Stadtwerke Göttingen AG from Maschmühlenweg. Since early 2020, wood chips from the region have been used here for heat generation. This allows saving about 6,000 tons of CO2 annually.

Now cycle to the Leine river and pass by the Kies lake. A short detour over the Leine on Kiessee Street puts you near the Stegemühle waterworks. The site is unfortunately not accessible to unauthorized persons. Stadtwerke Göttingen AG operates a run-of-the-river power plant here. It was refurbished in 1994 and has a capacity of 30 kW.

Through the fields, you reach the biogas plant "Biogas Göttingen GmbH Co. KG." The plants used for gas production come exclusively from farmers in the region. The raw biogas is purchased by Stadtwerke Göttingen AG and transported via an eight-kilometer-long direct pipeline to the heating power plant of the city utilities in Godehard Street. Here, electricity and district heat are generated in CHP plants. The heat is fed into the Stadtwerke’s city center network, which supplies around 150 buildings.

The last station of the route is Göttingen's only wind turbine „EVA 2“ near Duderstädter Land Street. It was commissioned in 1998. The operator is the joint ownership group Energie-Verbund-Angerstraße (EVA). The average annual output since commissioning is over 1,400,000 kWh.

As a reward for the long route, you can roll back into the city and enjoy the view.
