Historical Achenbach circular route

The walk starts at the memorial to the former Belgian garrison. Along the historical themed circular route, 20 information panels offer an insight into the impressive combination of the regional landscape and the local cultural history.

A panel along the way provides information about the smelting furnaces from the La-Tène period in the Engsbachtal valley. In 1933/34, around 40 iron smelting furnaces were discovered here. Those that were best preserved were removed, and now stand in the Siegerlandmuseum in Siegen. There’s plenty to stop and reverently admire in the Numbachtal valley nature reserve. The walk follows the quietly burbling stream through the silent natural surroundings into the valley. The historical circular route comes into contact with two famous pilgrimage routes, the Elisabethpfad and the Jakobsweg, and takes you to another special feature. Behind the “Starker Buberg” hill, which at 431 m is the highest elevation on the walk, you come across the Seelbacher “Hauberg” (mixed oak and birch woods). Another interesting feature is the ensemble consisting of the Alte Schule (old school) and Heimathaus (local museum) in Achenbach and the futuristic architect’s house, the “Skycube”. Well marked, informative, challenging, recommended.
