This route, relatively short but intense, offers a panoramic view full of colors: the blue of the lake, the red ruffes, the yellow of the broom, the mosaic of the vineyards. The eye also rests on the ghostly shapes of the Cirque de Mourèze.
1
From the parking lot, reach the lake shore; go left for 100 m. Leave the path and climb left. Join a track, climb through the vineyards. Higher up, join the D 156.
2
Turn right then immediately take the left Lacan path, lined with plane trees. Further on, leave the Château de la Marguerite on the left and continue on the dirt track. At the fork, go left. Pass between two vineyards bordered by a stone wall. Pass the catchment area and, by the old mule track, climb to Portes Pass ignoring the other junctions.
3
At the pass (junction with the Cirque de Mourèze PR, shared routes along the ridge), leave on the right the path leading to the Lousses ridge and the forest path opposite that leads to Mourèze to follow the left path. It climbs Mont Liausson. Continue left along the ridgeline and reach the ruins of the hermitage of Saint-Jean-d’Aureillan (circular panorama) before reaching the end of the ridge.
4
The path descends through an oak wood. Ignore the paths on the right descending to Mourèze. After two switchbacks, regain the ridge and follow it before dropping onto the north slope. Leave a ravine and the Liausson cave on the right and continue the descent along the path to Liausson. In the village, turn left onto the road towards the washhouses, next to the town hall, and continue the road for a few meters.
5
Turn right onto chemin du Galant. Descend and return to the parking lot by the path taken earlier.
- This hike is a 'must-see': it can be very busy on weekends all year round, and in summer: if you can do it during the week off-season, you'll enjoy it more!
- Steep ascent from the Portes Pass to the summit of Mont Liausson
- Slippery descent in rainy weather between the ridges of Mont Liausson and the village
- The circuit is connected with the Mourèze PR: carefully follow the signs on the signposts
- Tip: for those who want to do more and enjoy a more complete experience of the Grand Site Salagou - Cirque de Mourèze, it is possible to combine the 2 PRs. At Portes Pass, descend to Mourèze, cross the village to reach the Courtinals, and climb back towards Mont Liausson by the Cirque de Mourèze PR. The hike is just under 12km with nearly 700m of elevation gain, including the round trip to the viewpoint of St Jean d'Aureillan. A must...
