The Romanesque Parish Churches between Castell'Alfero and Portacomaro

The route starts from Portacomaro and its fortress: on Via Degiani, where the old cemetery once stood, at the top of a beautiful stone staircase, the church of San Pietro shows the beautiful two-tone facade. Going down into the valley and crossing the SS 457, you proceed towards Castell'Alfero. You reach Madonna della Neve, a church with interesting carved single-light windows and the unique cylindrical bell tower. From here, crossing the Versa Valley, you arrive at Calliano where, along the provincial road to Grana, you come across the small church of San Pietro. The next stop is Grana, then passing behind the imposing castle of Montemagno, you arrive before the Church of Santa Maria della Cava (with 15th-century frescoes) and, near the cemetery, the evocative Romanesque ruins of SS. Vittore and Corona. Continuing on dirt roads and not overlooking the centers of Castagnole Monferrato and Scurzolengo, you return to Portacomaro.
