The South Bohemian town of Prachatice is located in the tri-border area with Germany and Austria and is among the best-preserved urban architectural ensembles in the Czech Republic. The historic old town has retained its Renaissance form within a ring of intact city walls. This is one of the reasons why the historic old town was declared a municipal conservation area in 1981. One of the region's most important trade routes also contributed to the city's historical significance - the Golden Path, which connected Czechia with Bavaria and passed through the Bohemian Forest. Especially in the Middle Ages, this route was a crucial link for trade with Bavarian salt, which was transported on pack animals from the bishopric of Passau to the Bohemian town of Prachatice.
And how did Prachatice manage to preserve its historical character? Also thanks to the economic stagnation in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, Prachatice offers visitors and residents a distinctive Renaissance ambiance, interspersed only by a few more modern Empire-style buildings. Also noteworthy is the surrounding area of the city on a high plateau with the dominant elevation of Libín (1096 meters above sea level), seamlessly merging into the mountain ridge of the Bohemian Forest. The higher elevation and rugged relief create special climatic conditions. Average temperatures in winter range from -5 to -9 °C and in summer from 13 to 17 °C.
