The long ridge of Oshlak thrones over the Lumbardhi i Prizrenit valley and extends all the way from the pass village Prevalle almost to Prizren. The ascent from Prevalle takes you partly steep but never too challenging through lush pine forests and finally beyond the tree line to the minor summit of Maja e Arnenit. From their we follow the sheer endless ridge to the highest point, the summit of Maja e Oshlakut. The views up here are breathtaking, extending across the high peaks of the Sharri Mountains to the south and all across the Kosovo Field. Also, as the Sharr Mountains National Park is rich with brown bears, it is not unlikely that you get to see one of the furry fellas from up on the ridge. The descend first follows the ridge back the way you came before descending into the slopes above Prevalle without having to climb up to Arnenit again.
From the main road of Prevalle at the highest point of the pass, take the dirt road leading up past Hotel & Restaurant Prevalle with its large window front. Walk past the dusty parking lot and keep going straight on the now cobbled street past small houses and steep up the hill. When you pass the the last houses, the road ends in a T-junction with a trail continuing straigt. Ignore this one and instead turn right and then take the trail leading off slightly to the left towards a meadow and some trees. This is the path that will take you up to the summit of Maja e Arnenit. It first climbs gently along the slope, alternating between small forest patches and bushy terrain. After you've gained about 100m of altitude, the path turns left and takes you, partly on some loose scree, steeper up towards the peak. You pass another forest and eventually climb beyond the tree line to step onto the broad summit of Maja e Arnenit.
From here, the trail is very obvious: Continue along the ridge in the direction of Maja e Oshlakut, which you can already see very clearly from here. You descend into the saddle between both peaks. Once you've reached the lowest point of the ridge, you start your ascent over the long ridge to the highest point. The path disappears at times, but as long as you stay on the highest point of the broad ridge, you can't go wrong. The summit of Oshlak is a broad, meadowed plateau with plenty of space to sit down and enjoy the breathtaking view.
To return to Prevalle, retrieve your steps along the ridge all the way to the saddle, at the lowest point of the ridgeline. Climb up to the first slightly higher hilltop ahead of you. There, keep right on a small but clearly visible path. You cross the flank of the mountain and soon find yourself back in the pine forest. From now on, the trail continues first down along the forested flank, then at the same altitude along the slope back to the uppermost houses of Prevalle.
Unfortunately, there are currently no useable print maps available for this part of the Sharri Mountains. Make sure to bring your smartphone, GPS device or at least a print-out of this route description so you don't get lost.
Oshlak is the last outpost of the Sharr Mountains exceeding 2,000 meters and thus is often prone to strong winds and potentially hazardous wheather. Make sure to check the report before and be prepared to turn around should a sudden change of weather occur - you don't want to be stuck up there in a thunderstorm or blizzard.
As far as furry companions are concerned, both bears and wolves are very shy and usually run away as soon as they hear or spot you. Respect them and they'll respect you.
From Prizren, take Route R-115 directly to Prevalle.
From Pristina, take Highway R-6 in the direction of Skopje until the exit leading to R-115. Follow R-115 through the town of Brezovice and keep on the road all the way to the pass of Prevalle.
Local bus carrier Zhupa Trans runs multiple bus services per day from Prizren (main bus station) to Prevalle. You'll have to ask around a little to find them in Prizren, but people are very friendly and happy to help.
Parking lots available on both sides of the main road.
One of the best ways to explore the Oshlak massive while learning plenty about the local nature, culture, and traditions is by going with a local guide. Hiking guide Besi is a great choice: https://outdooractive.com/en/r/801655823/
