Altkötzschenbroda – Where Historic Charm Meets Vibrant Culture.

The charming village center of Radebeul blends traditional rural character with modern living, making it a popular gathering spot for locals and visitors alike.

Since 1935, the street running through the historic center of Kötzschenbroda has been named Altkötzschenbroda.

In the 17th century, the village square was divided by a communal slaughterhouse standing crosswise. This building not only served an economic function but also held the rights to bake, serve drinks, and accommodate guests.

The smaller eastern section in front of the Friedenskirche (Peace Church) was traditionally called Markt (Market)—and indeed, it was the site of Kötzschenbroda’s weekly markets.

The larger western area has been known as Hauptstraße (Main Street) since the mid-19th century.

The layout of the square follows an almost textbook example of a Franconian Straßenangerdorf (a linear village with a central green): narrow, deep farmsteads shape its character. The surviving farmhouses and retirement cottages (Auszugshäuser) mostly date back to the 19th century.

Among the most striking buildings—alongside the church and parsonage—are the historic Oberschänke inn and the Hotel Goldener Anker, in front of which the steel sculpture "Gegen den Strom" ("Against the Current") by artist Karl Menzen has stood since 1999.

Since the comprehensive redesign began in 1990, the village square has evolved into a popular promenade, lined with cozy pubs, charming cafés, small galleries, and stylish boutiques. Its proximity to the Elbe Cycle Route and regular events like the autumn wine festival or the Radebeul Christmas Market make Altkötzschenbroda one of the region’s most attractive destinations.
