Welcome to the "Alte Welt," a picturesque region in the northern Palatinate! The name originated after the construction of railway lines in the valleys of the Glan, Lauter, and Alsenz rivers and still describes the mountainous area between the three river valleys. Due to its location, it could not benefit from development through the railway. This fact earned it the name "Alte Welt." Today, the Alte Welt stands for pure rural life and convinces with its beautiful nature and tranquility.
The start and end point is the train station in Rockenhausen. We follow the Alsenztal cycle path towards Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg. In Dielkirchen, we turn left onto the green-white marked cycle path signs towards Ransweiler. Now follows, with an ascent to 352 meters in height, the biggest challenge of the route. Here, there is a spectacular view of the Alte Welt. To the left of our route lies the Stahlberg with the village of the same name. The mountain is a historic mining area where cinnabar and mercury were mined until the 20th century. In the hamlet Neubau is the inn "Zum Blauen Löwen", one of the oldest inns in the Palatinate. We enjoy the descent to Ransweiler. We follow the green-white cycle path signs on a cycle path separated from the road over the Moscheltal cycle path starting in Waldgrehweiler, passing through Finkenbach-Gersweiler, Schiersfeld and Sitters to Obermoschel. The route leads us through a magnificent high valley. In Obermoschel, we are in the smallest town of the Palatinate. It was one of the main smelting and transshipment places of the mercury mined in the region. The small, charming marketplace or the Moschellandsburg castle are worth a detour here. For families, the multi-generational area is suitable for relaxing and playing. Then we continue towards Alsenz. The charming place was a center of sandstone mining, which can be seen in the many artistic cornices and gate structures in the village. Now we are back on the Alsenztal cycle path. We follow it back to Rockenhausen. There, the picturesque old town with its three museums and several places to stop for refreshments await cyclists. In summer, cooling off in the natural adventure swimming pool is certainly a successful end to the route.
For our cycling routes, we recommend the following equipment as standard:
(Touring) bike; on hillier routes, more gears or electric assistance provide more comfort Bicycle helmet cycling-appropriate clothing, also for bad weather bicycle bag for storing equipment and provisions Sunglasses or protective glasses, also protect against insects Smartphone with the Rhineland-Palatinate app, for navigation and information on sights, places to stop along the route and more - LINK essential tools and spare parts, possibly charging accessories for e-bike sun protection, especially on routes through fields and vineyardsOur cycle routes often run on paths shared with others. We therefore ask for courteous and friendly behavior at all times. Winemakers, farmers and foresters use the service roads through fields, forests and vineyards for their daily work (also on weekends) and always have priority. Due to work operations and/or weather conditions, these paths may be more heavily soiled from time to time. Special caution is also advised when riding on the (usually quiet and lightly trafficked) roads in and around the Palatinate villages.
WARNING: In the upcoming 2024 cycling season, the Alsenztal cycle path is closed in a section between Bayerfeld and Mannweiler-Cölln due to bridge work. A detour will be made from Steckweiler via the B48. The detour will be signposted.
