Whether you arrive by bus, train, car or bike, the tour starts at the Saxon Brewery Museum at the Rechenberg brewery. During the guided tour, you will be immersed in a world of beer in general and Rechenberg beer in particular. The art of brewing, which has been practiced here for more than four centuries, the development of the town, the special architecture of the brewery and the family history are all told, explained, shown ... and tasted. Via the herb trail to Holzhau, we visit a very young brewery, the Rumpelbräu, a small Erzgebirge brewery where beers are brewed by hand in manageable quantities and to a high quality. From here, after a refreshment stop, we either continue to the next stop on the Freiberg Railway or through Holzhau back to the starting point.
Directly behind the brewery, a field path - our signposted herb trail - begins, initially quite steeply uphill, about 500m long. Up to the end of the ascent and further on to the start of the Schanzenweg, there is a lot to learn ... not about hops and malt, but about the diversity of the Erzgebirge flora and the various ways in which herbs can be processed, used and prepared. The herb trail turns off to the right, but continues along the Schanzenweg, now steadily downhill into the Mulde valley. Between the road and the Mulde, the path leads directly to Holzhau. After crossing the bridge and the level crossing, you walk slightly uphill along the mountain road until you reach the "Rumpelbräu" brewery at no. 10a on the left, where the brewer from the "Rumpelbräu" welcomes you with a "Glück auf". Now it's up to the hiker to decide: first a beer and then the guided tour or first .... and another beer?
The path back to the starting point leads downhill to the level crossing, but this is not crossed. Turn left onto Tannenweg, then a little later turn right onto Alte Straße and simply follow the road to Rechenberg. Even if only a few vehicles use the Alte Straße, a little caution is required. The view of the river and the Mulde valley are now your companions until you see the Schramm bakery on the right at the foot of the castle (ruins) hill in Rechenberg. The bakery is located in the neighboring village of Dorfchemnitz and places great value on good, preferably regional, ingredients, making it easy to make another stop ... otherwise, quickly walk another 30 or 40 m and arrive at the starting point.
