Orchard meadows and orchard rows are defining and valuable elements in the cultural landscape of the Eastern Ore Mountains. They connect various habitats such as open landscapes with settlement areas and have great importance for nature and landscape, for environmental protection, and for human health. On this small route, you can see diverse structures, including old, partly in need of care orchard meadows, commercial fruit farming - mainly cherries and apples - and newly established orchard meadows with various fruit varieties, which represent the variety of the area to be explored. Nine information panels/action elements are planned and being implemented by 2026 to bring awareness of the specialness and importance of these historical cultural treasures back to consciousness and to raise the population's sensitivity to orchard fruit. There will be knowledge growth for both young and old.
The route starts in the center of Gombsen at the Lower Village Pond, parking lot at the intersection of Baumschulenstraße-Borthener Weg, and goes along Baumschulenstraße towards Saida. On the left side, you can see diverse structures, including large old orchard meadows, new plantings, and in the background commercial fruit farming, which also occupies large areas on the right side. On the left in the background, newly planted orchard meadows can be seen on Borthener Weg. At the entrance to Saida, the route continues onto Gombsener Straße, passing the farm shop of Pietzsch & Winkler fruit farm, the inn "Zur Quelle," an older orchard meadow, up to the beginning of the commercial fruit farming area. Here you can leave the street and continue alongside on the edge of the meadow. After about 550 m, you reach the Wasserbergweg on the left, which you turn into. Along commercial fruit farming, very old and newly established orchard meadows, you reach the village of Gombsen again and walk about 220 m back to the parking lot. Signage for hiking trails is available on site. As part of the installation of information panels, a specific marking will be added by 2026.
Parts of the route are located in the Lockwitztal and Gebergrund landscape conservation area.
