From Altenberg train station (tourist information), keep left, walk towards EDEKA, cross the road that leads to Hirschsprung and follow the signs to Geisingberg (824m). The Geisingberg is a popular hiking destination at any time of year. An ascent of the Louisenturm is particularly recommended when the views are good, as you can enjoy the magnificent panorama of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains to the full. For hikers interested in botany, the slopes of the Geisingberg offer a unique treasure trove of protected plants. ( Ex: Cowslip, daphne, lily of the valley, arnica, troll flower, Turk's cap lily, orchid, columbine and foxglove).

When the sun warms the black basalt in spring, you will come across sand lizards, grass snakes, slow worms and adders. On rainy days, you might be lucky enough to spot the now rare fire salamander along the roadside. The entire Geisingberg and large parts of its adjacent slopes are a nature reserve. Visitors should respect this and stick to the many paths available when hiking.

Follow the green markings /Kammweg downhill to the fork after the Geisingborn, turn left here and follow the green dot markings to the Lerchenhübel. Turn right here onto the "Hohe Straße" path and continue straight ahead to the fork in the path where you turn left towards Bärenstein and right towards Geisinggrund. Follow the path to the right into the Geisinggrund and come out below the Osterzgebirge wildlife park.
