Tauernradweg - stage from Bischofshofen via Werfen to Golling

1st section: Bischofshofen - Golling (21 km)

Follow the Salzburgerstraße and turn into Siedlungsgasse at the roundabout. There, pass right past a tennis hall and cross the Salzach, along the railway line, pass underneath on the left below and from then on continue on low-traffic roads. After a bridge, the Tauernradweg follows the railway line and along the Salzach. If you want to take a break in Pfarrwerfen, you can turn left into the town center shortly before the Salzach bridge. If you cross the bridge and continue, you can briefly go further to pass under the federal road and reach the Main square of Werfen.

From the main square, head north and you will reach the federal road again. This will take you through Tenneck. Now you have to overcome the Pass Lueg, which is not a big obstacle. Now it's time to relax again - it goes fast downhill to Golling! About 500 m after the bridge, turn left at the sign "Moartal" and after another 500 m turn right. The unpaved meadow path ends at a farm, where you turn left and return to an asphalt road. From there, you can either go to the market square of Golling or 200 m further to the right to the Salzach bridge to join the Tauernradweg again beside the Salzach.

Also ensure that the light shines brightly enough to avoid accidents. Another aid in the dark are the reflectors on the front and rear wheels, on the pedals, and the tail light with reflector.

Every year numerous accidents involving cyclists occur – whether child or adult, so it is important not to neglect some safety measures. We would like to present to you the most important factors here.

Maintenance and Care of the Bicycle
Not only the equipment is important for safety while riding – regular maintenance and care increases safety and the bicycle wears out more slowly.

Check regularly the braking power – here the brake pads may need to be replaced or the brake levers must be tightened. Tire pressure is also extremely important: too low tire pressure accelerates wear and also increases the risk of punctures.

The chain should be regularly oiled. Use non-viscous oil, as viscous oil attracts more dirt and increases wear. Also check that the saddle and handlebar are secure and properly seated.

Traffic Rules for Cyclists
Refresh your knowledge – your bike club and the police provide a lot of information about the rules for cyclists. Here are some important points: Cyclists must also expect fines for violations of traffic regulations. It becomes particularly dangerous if you are under the influence of alcohol. You either have to pay a fine or may even lose your driving license! Cycling on the sidewalk is prohibited – use the roads or the often specially built bike paths. If a bike lane is blocked by a car, the police can be called as this is considered a traffic hazard! But beware: if you use a phone while cycling, you will face a fine just as drivers do!

Coming from Salzburg on the A10 Tauern Motorway, take the Werfen / Pfarrwerfen exit or Pass Lueg Tenneck Werfen exit and turn right towards Werfen (Salzachtal federal road B 159).

Coming from Zell am See / Villach on the A10 Tauern Motorway, take the Werfen / Pfarrwerfen exit and turn left towards Werfen (Salzachtal federal road B 159).

Parking is available in the designated parking spaces at the train station, next to the fire department, and at the town entrance center. Paid parking is available in the town center. Maximum parking duration is 3 hours.

Short-term parking zone in Werfen:
Parking time in the town center: first hour free, then 90 minutes €0.50, up to 120 minutes €1.00, up to 150 minutes €2.00, up to 180 minutes €3.00. Guests with a guest card displayed in the windshield can park free of charge in the town center until 11:00 a.m.

Werfen-South, Werfen-Center, and parking lot next to the Werfen fire department.

Tip for onward journey: Those cycling with children should take the train from Werfen to Golling as there is no specially marked bike path over Pass Lueg.
