Almost the entire climb is accompanied by the view across the valley up to the glaciers of the Hohe Tauern. With a bit of luck, you may also encounter the pink pigs on the way, enjoying the good life in the mountains with a sunbath before the biker heads down the valley again on perfect gravel. You then follow beautiful paths through the moorland of the Hochmoor Wasenmoos, and you should definitely not miss a stop at the Sunnseit restaurant (www.sunnseit.at) to recharge for the remaining descent and gather strength. The return to Mittersill follows a gravel variant of the classic Tauern cycle path.
The route starts in Mittersill from where it goes over Burk and Mittersill Castle first to Thalbach and then continues over Weißenstein and Loferstein steadily uphill to Brentlingalm. Afterwards, the path leads downhill over Bärenfilz to Pass Thurn or the middle station of the Panoramabahn Kitzbüheler Alpen. From there it continues via Schweinegg towards Mühlbach. On the shady side, it then goes back through the valley over Hollersbach and from there along the Tauern cycle path back to Mittersill.
CX/gravel bikes are best suited; lightweight hardtail mountain bikes are slower on the flatter sections but also work well. Also bring provisions, helmet, gloves, and rainwear.
Experience on gravel is important. However, if you are primarily used to the road, a preparatory course (www.bikeaustria.com) is recommended. Stable braking technique is important when riding quickly on gravel with CX tires.
The Mittersill-Hollersbach-Stuhlfelden region is very well accessible by public transport.
