The legend of the "Müllerfuchs of Gerstboden"
According to the legend, not so long ago, a fox caused mischief around Lenzing. It was the soul of a blaspheming miller, who found no peace as a fox. “If I am to become something after death, I’d prefer to be a fox,” the miller is said to have blasphemed in the passed-down story.
And so it was. After the sudden death of the miller, the Müllerfuchs caused trouble between Wiesersberg and Lenzing all night. He frightened the population with his howling until the clock struck 4 and the nightly haunting ended. After some weeks of unrest and fear, the hunters tried to ambush the Müllerfuchs, but he escaped.
Only when the miller’s wife made a pilgrimage to Maria Kirchental was his soul freed and the fox disappeared.
The starting point of the hike is the Steinbergstadion in Leogang. Follow Rosental Street past the fitness course parking lot. At the first junction, turn right. As soon as you reach the Sinning district, turn left and pass through the railway underpass, keeping left. Follow the yellow hiking signs to the right into the forest towards "Lettlkaser/Müllerfuchs." The path turns into a meadow trail and leads directly to the fox. Seating is available just behind the fox in front of the barn. From here, follow the path back into the valley and return to the starting point.
This hike goes through some shady forest sections and is therefore also suitable for hot days.
NOTE: The Müllerfuchs is woven from traditional Pinzgau "Giaschdn" fencing. Climbing on/over the fence causes damage and is NOT allowed! Parents are liable for their children. The Müllerfuchs is located amidst a managed meadow – please be mindful of grazing livestock. Dogs must be kept on a leash without exception!

The fox head, woven from traditional Pinzgau "Giaschdn" fencing, was designed and built in 2009 by local architect Ulrich Stöckl. A complete restoration was carried out in 2018. Since then, the fox is directly accessible via a hiking trail. The fox comes from the legend of the "Müllerfuchs of Gerstboden" and is fully illuminated at night – thus the fox returns every night and shines over Saalfelden Leogang.
The Müllerfuchs is not only a highlight during the day. Once it gets dark, it lights up and can be seen from the valley. So: keep your eyes open!
