Fitness: The path runs mostly in the valley of the Saalach. Only a few elevation meters must be covered. The total walking time for the just under 5.5 kilometers is about 2 hours.
In brief: The entire hike follows well-developed hiking paths. The outbound path follows the Saalach downstream. The return leads through forest and over meadows. Dining options are available halfway through the route in Au at Gasthaus Antonia or at the restaurants and cafés in the center of Lofer.
Tour highlights: The first part of the hike runs close along the river, which flows here especially wildly between huge boulders. Maybe you will spot a kayaker in the Teufelsschlucht.
The route is part of the Hiking with Kids in the Salzburger Saalachtal. Duration and level of difficulty are designed for children/families.
From the information office in Lofer, it takes 5 minutes on the footpath beside the road to reach the Teufelssteg. Do not cross it but follow the left side downstream along the Saalach. The Triftsteig was heavily damaged by flooding in 2013 and reopened in autumn 2020. The hike continues past the "Wildwater Marina", the entry point for water sports enthusiasts, and over the Auer Bridge. Immediately after the Auer Bridge, turn right onto hiking trail 62 to Au. Return to Lofer via the Bairauweg just above the river with wonderful views of the Loferer Steinberge. After the Bairau, you pass through Bairaupark back to the Teufelssteg, cross it, and return to the center of Lofer.
