The hike begins at Schloss Elisabethenburg Meiningen, the former residence of the Dukes of Saxe-Meiningen. From there you go through the English Garden, one of Germany's oldest landscape gardens, which invites you to relax with its ponds, bridges, and sculptures. After leaving the garden, follow the hiking trail towards Webersbrunen, an idyllic rest area with a spring and a shelter.
The path continues uphill to Hohe Maas, the highest point of the hike at 498 meters. From here you have a wonderful view over the Rhön and, in good visibility, can even see the Wasserkuppe. After a short break, continue to the Cotta Hut, another shelter with a memorial stone for the poet Ludwig Bechstein.
The last section of the hike leads to the Bakunin Hut and back to the starting point at Schloss Elisabethenburg Meiningen.

Please be aware of typical forest hazards and follow the instructions of the Thuringia Forestry staff. Also, disposing of rubbish is only allowed at designated spots (rest areas with trash bins).
Exit the A71 at exit 21-Meiningen-Nord and follow the B19 towards Meiningen-Nord/Bad Salzungen/Kaltennordheim/Wasungen. Follow the L1140 and Rohrer Strasse via Marienstrasse and turn right onto Georgstrasse. Follow the road into Klostergasse. The parking lot is on the right side.
Meiningen is accessible via the South Thuringia Railway from Erfurt, Eisenach, and Sonneberg.
Arrival at Meiningen, train station
(Please enter the starting point and desired travel period in the form) Exit the South Thuringia Railway at the Meiningen stop. Through the English Garden you can reach Schloss Elisabethenburg on foot in about 12 minutes.
