The TKW 4 starts at the information board and passes the Hotel Oberland, then turns right, following the beautiful Masserberg ridge trail which is wide and suitable for wheelchairs or strollers due to its surface. After about 25 to 30 minutes through dense spruce forest, you reach the refuge hut Zum Eselsgrund where you can take a short rest. Then continue straight towards Waffenrod/Hinterrod. After a short forest section, on the right you find a magnificent forest meadow. From there, on clear days, you have a magnificent view of the villages of Heubach and Schnett and the surrounding area up to the Gleichberge mountains in the Heldburger Unterland. The path then circles around Sommerberg to the Werra spring hut, inviting you to rest comfortably with Thuringian specialties, a cool beer, coffee, and delicious homemade cake. You can also sit outside in the forest and listen to the cheerful babbling of the Werra spring and the native birds. Refreshed, continue to the wide path in front of the cabin. Then, at the signpost, immediately turn left into the forest and hike over the Faule bridge on a narrow, somewhat steeper path up to the heath hut. From there, keep left on the Rennsteig and walk past the raised bog to the Rennsteig lookout tower on Eselsberg. Climbing the tower is definitely worth it (for a small fee, 1€). From above, you have a fantastic view of the Thuringian Forest and Franconia before you start the steep descent back down to Masserberg and finish this hike at Hotel Oberland (open daily, no rest day) with delicious Thuringian specialties or cake and coffee in the beautiful beer garden.

From Eisenach or Dresden A4: Exit the A4 at Erfurter Kreuz onto the new A71 towards Ilmenau (until Ilmenau East exit). There take the B87 (right) and continue towards Ilmenau city center (or towards Schleusingen / Suhl) until you reach the sign to Neustadt / a.R., turn towards Neustadt / a.R., continue straight over the railway tracks to Neustadt am Rennsteig. From there it is only 9 km to Masserberg.
From Schleusingen: Take the B4 towards Eisfeld, turn left at Ratscher towards Masserberg / Neustadt a.R. After the village of Waldau, first turn right, then left towards Masserberg. Continue via Lichtenau, Engenstein, Biberschlag and Tellerhammer to Masserberg.
From Bamberg: Take the A73 to Eisfeld-Nord, then the B4 towards Eisfeld until the roundabout, take the 3rd exit towards Neuhaus/Masserberg B281a, turn left onto B281a towards Masserberg, continue via Einsiedel, Fehrenbach to Masserberg.
From Schweinfurt: Take the B303 to Coburg, then from Coburg the A73 to Eisfeld-Nord, then the B4 towards Eisfeld until the roundabout, take the 3rd exit towards Neuhaus/Masserberg B281a, turn left onto B281a towards Masserberg, continue via Einsiedel, Fehrenbach to Masserberg.
From Eisfeld: Turn right towards Neuhaus / Saalfeld, at the next intersection go towards Masserberg, continue via Waffenrod-Hinterrod to Masserberg.
From Hildburghausen: Drive towards Schleusingen, turn right at Gerhardtsgereuth towards Wiedersbach, then join the B4 towards Eisfeld. After the village of Schwarzbach turn left towards Masserberg, continue via Lichtenau, Engenstein, Biberschlag and Tellerhammer to Masserberg.
