Circular route Möhrenbach to Langen Berg and back Thuringian Forest

The monument was created between 1911 and 1912 on the initiative of the Thuringian Forest Association Gehren. The main idea was to honor the deceased sovereign Prince Karl Günther of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen, who often stayed with his wife Marie at the castle of Gehren, which belonged to the dominion.

The foundation by the prince's widow, a three-meter high statue of her husband, required a monumental structure. The bronze statue of the prince as a hunter, modeled by the Weimar sculptor Arnold Zauche, was placed on the top of the three levels.

During World War II, the statue was dismantled and stored at the "Glockenfriedhof" in Hamburg. Its trail was lost in the mid-1970s. Today, a replica of the original bronze statue exists.

Several restorations, the last in 1991 by the "Langer Berg" association, could not prevent the monument's decay; it was at risk of collapsing. Only in September 2002 were the financial conditions for rebuilding and renovating the memorial hall created through the LEADER+ program of the European Union, together with the employment office and the higher monument authority of Thuringia. The work was completed in May 2004. The entire ensemble was handed over to the public on May 20 and 21, 2004.

The Langer Berg monument is accessible via well-marked hiking trails from Gehren, Herschdorf, Möhrenbach, Pennewitz, and Willmersdorf (longest route approx. 5 km).

At the top, on a clear day, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Thuringian region extending to the Harz and Kyffhäuser elevations in the north, as well as to the Rennsteig and the Saale valley in the south. In 2016, this view was voted as one of the most beautiful viewpoints in southern Thuringia.
