At 1,900 metres, on the eastern edge of Trentino, at the pass named after the Friars of San Pellegrino - a historic passage for soldiers and a site of battles - this lake provides tranquillity and enhances the beauty of every season. Along its path, enriched with wooden sculptures, it crosses bridges and walkways. Above all, in its waters, depending on the light and shadows cast by the sun's movement, you can recognise in a blue and green mirror the ridges of Costabella and Col Margherita, Cima di Juribrutto, and even Cima d'Uomo. As you walk, you may notice your pace slowing down, giving you time to look around and, above all, to breathe in the scent of larch, stone pine, and dwarf pine. Look for traces of forest animals and the colours of juniper branches, a fundamental ingredient of Ladin tradition. And once the loop is completed, you'll feel the urge to keep walking, at a gentle pace, through the Fuciade basin.
Lake San Pellegrino lies at the foot of Col Margherita, resting on a volcanic rock bed and sheltered by a charming forest of larch trees and Swiss pines. It is the gem of the pass, a place to be discovered on foot, slowly and in silence. The peaks that frame the Dolomite Pass, painted by the colours of the seasons, are reflected in its calm, non-swimmable waters. The trail starts from the car park in front of the Hotel Monzoni. After a short descent of 50 metres along a dirt path, you will reach a platform equipped with benches and picnic tables. From here, you can continue along the path that runs along the lake's shores, choosing whether to follow it in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. The path winds through bridges, wooden walkways and gentle descents, immersed in nature. If you want to extend the walk, instead of immediately returning to the car park, before the ramp, take the path on the right that crosses the pastures. The path runs alongside the Hotel Cristallo and soon leads to Malga San Pellegrino.
The tour of Lake San Pellegrino can be considered the first stage of an easy walk, suitable even for children, leading to the marvellous Fuciade basin and Val Freida, with an intermediate stop at Hotel Miralago and Pozze Lake.
The San Pellegrino Pass can be reached by car or by public transport from Moena (11 km).
