A walk with spectacular views leads to Pian, a small village suspended in time, with the Sassolungo standing guard over the trail. In the past, farmers and shepherds lived in harmony with the animals of...
It is said that a tribe of good and generous giants once lived in the valley, loved by humans, with whom they exchanged food for gold ingots that sparkled in the riverbeds. But one day the giant Sassolungo was born with a wicked spirit: he raided crops and livestock, then blamed foxes, squirrels, magpies and martens. When the king of the giants discovered his lies, Sassolungo was condemned to sink into the earth with every lie he told. All that remains of him are the fingers of his hand: the five solemn peaks of the Sassolungo.
From the tourist office in Canazei's central square, walk down Strèda Roma, passing the playground. At the crossroads, continue straight along Strèda del Ciuch, which follows the meadows of Gries. Leaving the village behind, the narrow lane enters the woods for about 400 metres. Continue along the bank of the Avisio river until you reach the first houses of Campitello. Follow Strèda Veia to the square, then take Strèda dò Ruf. At the junction with Strèda de Salin and Strèda Sènc Felip e Giacum, climb the steps on the right-hand side of the road, where the chairlift to Col Rodella once departed. Continue straight ahead and, in front of the wayside Marian shrine, turn right.
Here a steep path begins, lined with the chapels of the Stations of the Cross (built in 1760 and restored in 1978), each accompanied by thought-provoking sayings in Ladin. Among the most unusual are: "It is more valuable to take off your hat before the Passion of Christ than to whitewash the shrine" and "O Heart of Jesus, protect all those who go up and down". Once you reach Pian, visit the small village with its little church dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin, one of the oldest - and still inhabited - settlements in the Fassa Valley, where you can also see some ancient bread ovens, located outside the perimeter walls of the houses. Then descend to the right along Strèda de Pian. At the hairpin bend, leave the municipal road and take the "So Ronch" forest road on the left. Follow the easy path to the car park of Park Hotel Il Caminetto. Reach the hotel entrance and cross the main road. Immediately after the wooden sign, take the dirt track that descends to the right and leads into Strèda Franz Dantone. At the junction with Strèda del Ciuch, return to the centre along the same route as on the way out.
If you prefer to start from Campitello, follow the directions for walk No. 61.

Periodic maintenance and inspection of the trails will be provided, especially after snowfall. It is recommended to always pay close attention to the type of terrain, as icy and slippery sections cannot be ruled out. It is also recommended to always be properly equipped. Walking times are approximate only, and it is important to consider that walking on snow is much more strenuous than walking without it.
