A sunny excursion towards Catinaccio, the garden of King Laurin. The peculiarity of Vigo is that it is not fortified, but rather grown in small scattered hamlets, rich in historical, artistic, and religious sites scattered around, accessible only by a walk. Vigo was the political and religious capital of the valley, blessed by the magnificent church of Santa Giuliana. Its bell tower was the only one spared during the Great War due to the value it represented not only in Fassa but also for the surrounding territories. The sun lasts longer here. This is also why, despite being entirely a poor mountain farming economy, its inhabitants were called the "patins da Vich." The greater exposure to heat and light allowed them more generous harvests, mainly rye and barley, and more abundant meals for their animals.
Winter walk around Vigo (no. 33)
Starting from the tourist office, walk along Strada Rezia until you reach the main road leading to Passo Costalunga/Carezza. Cross the road and take Strada de Val to reach the district of the same name, located on the right bank of the rio Ruf de Val. At the fork, turn right and climb the steep Strada de Somcosta. After passing Hotel Belvedere, descend to the left along Strada de Larcioné, heading towards the south side of the village. From here, join the country lane coming from Soraga. Continuing on, turn right onto Strada dal Dos and, following the path which in some parts borders the main road, return to the town center.
Along the route, you will be able to observe numerous historical evidences that tell of daily life and spirituality in the Val di Fassa. The fountains, called "festii" in Ladin, were essential places until the post-war period. They not only provided water for domestic use, but were also used for washing clothes and watering livestock. For this reason, they were often built with three basins: a small one for washing, a second for rinsing, and a larger one which had to remain always clean. Placed at the protection of crossroads or agricultural work areas, crucifixes and sacred shrines reflect the deep devotion of the people of Fassa and their connection to the territory.
