The Hohenwittlingensteig is one of our five premium hiking trails Grafensteige, which lead our hiking guests to the natural beauties in the Biosphere Reserve Swabian Alb. The tour promises many highlights in a short distance and is a little insider tip, even for already experienced Bad Urach hikers.
At the beginning of the tour, hikers can enjoy a leisurely stroll through the Wittlingen orchards to the Slit Rock. We enjoy the fresh Alb air and the tranquility of the Alb plateau. This is followed by a strenuous ascent from the Slit Rock to the Hohenwittlingen Castle ruins. There, we enjoy a great view over the hilly landscape of the Swabian Alb and the upper Erm Valley. Those who want can take a snack break at the foot of the ruins and grill their sausage at the barbecue located there.
The route then leads us to the mysterious Schiller Cave, where especially Rulaman fans will get their money's worth. Another highlight of the tour is the lush green Wolfsschlucht with mostly dry water flow, which can also be crossed via a short metal staircase that almost resembles alpine terrain. In the moist and pleasantly cool gorge, even in summer, the impressive sinter terraces formed by mineral deposits can be admired.

On the access road, we walk towards Bad Urach-Wittlingen and turn right onto a path that first takes us over orchards, then along the edge of the forest on the right and into the woods. At the next fork, we keep left and shortly afterwards right, then we follow the signage further towards the Slit Rock and descend a narrow path into the valley. On a forest road, we pass the Burgruine Baldeck, hidden in the dense forest, and walk right past the Slit Rock. Since the impressive rock face belongs to the best climbing rocks in the Swabian Alb, we may be lucky to see climbers in action. After a steep climb in the shady forest, we reach a forest road, which we follow shortly to the right to a fork, then disappear left on a path through the undergrowth. Along the edge of the slope, we pass the Buckfelsen below us and walk to the Burgruine Hohenwittlingen. Around the castle ruins, park benches and a built-in barbecue invite you to linger. The platform in the center of the site offers fantastic views over the green hilly landscape of the Urach Alb. Afterwards, we walk down to the dark Schiller Cave. A stepped descent through cozy mixed forest then leads deeper into the lush green Wolfsschlucht. In the moist and pleasantly cool gorge even in summer, we admire the impressive sinter terraces formed by mineral deposits. From here, it is not far; we follow the stream, turn right, and soon stand again at the P65 parking lot near Wittlingen.

The Grafensteige are not stroll but hiking paths. Sturdy footwear, hiking poles, and surefootedness are recommended for all routes. Especially after and during rainfall as well as in winter months, the limestone rock and ground, especially on slopes, can be very slippery. We ask you to exercise due caution.
