The starting point for this description is the Gipsmühle in Hohenschwangau; the hike is possible in both directions. From the Gipsmühle, follow the hiking signs towards the Tegelbergbahn. Passing the Reith-Alpe, follow the signs "Rohrkopfhütte" and continue along the Schutzengelweg to the junction "Drehhütte". From the Drehhütte, the path leads on a small trail to the unmanaged alpine pasture, the Mühlberger Älpele. From here, descend gently and then follow the signs "Buchenberg" (turn right). Upon reaching Buchenberg, follow the signs to Buching and then further to Halblech. From Halblech, it is about 20 - 30 minutes to reach Trauchgau, respectively the "Village Museum".
The route starts in Hohenschwangau, precisely at the Gipsmühle. Unfortunately, the Gipsmühle was destroyed by fire in 1988 and was not rebuilt, so you will find an impressive ruin here. Now continue hiking, turn right and follow the signs "Reith-Alpe" and "Rohrkopfhütte/Schutzengelweg". At the Reith-Alpe (operating in summer), keep right until you reach the Rauthbach, cross it and walk along the Schutzengelweg to the Rohrkopfhütte.
At the Rohrkopfhütte, you can comfortably sit on the terrace, enjoy the view and a snack. Refreshed, hike for about 20 minutes further until you reach the Drehhütte, where you can savor South Tyrolean specialties. Then continue your hike. On a small trail head towards the Mühlberger Älpele, and then continue slightly downhill to the junction "Buchenberg".
Stroll leisurely along the forest road and you will reach the entrance to the circular route "Buchenberg". Here you can decide whether to turn left and stop at the Buchenbergalm to enjoy the beautiful view or turn right and walk down the road to reach the center of Buching. Once in Buching, hike along the outskirts heading towards Halblech and from there directly further to Trauchgau.
Upon arrival in Trauchgau, you will find the sign to the "Village Museum," which is definitely worth a visit. From here, just walk down Austraße to the left and you will reach the town hall or the Steingadener Straße, where you will also find the bus stop that will take you back to the starting point.
