This wonderful, not too steep and family-friendly natural toboggan run is winter fun for the whole family. Since it is a natural toboggan run, the path can also be partially icy in winter. Caution when ascending or returning with or without sled. The Saualpe is also a popular destination in winter for friends of ski or snowshoe tours.
Warning: road closed to motor vehicles from December 21, 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Sledding enthusiasts hike from the Gießlhütte to the Zechhütte. The walking time is about 45 minutes. Sleds can be rented at the Gießlhütte. There are dining options at both the Gießlhütte and Zechhütte, where you can enjoy a good drink and regional specialties.

Ski pants:
It is most practical to wear ski pants for sledding. These pants do not get wet as quickly as, for example, jeans, and you do not sweat as much as under rain pants. If possible, you should still pack a second dry pair of pants to change into.
Gaiters:
Without gaiters, a lot of blown-up snow is blown directly into the pant legs. For this reason, you should definitely wear gaiters. You can only do without gaiters if you wear good ski pants with a snow cuff at the leg opening.
Ski goggles:
Ski goggles prevent you from having to squint repeatedly from the blown-up snow during fast descents. They are therefore highly recommended.
Gloves:
Wearing gloves is normally obvious in winter and wouldn’t need mentioning here. However, it has been shown that fingers can get very cold in light knitted gloves on longer descents. Therefore, stable and windproof mittens are highly recommended.
Helmet:
A helmet can prevent serious head injuries while sledding. Some sled runs are completely icy, and one can easily imagine what can happen if you hit your head directly on the ice layer, even from a low height. A helmet can also prevent injuries if there is a risk of collision with trees, posts, or other sledders.
10 sledding recommendations
1) Be considerate of other sled run users
Behave so that you do not endanger or harm others.
2) Observe closures and warning signs
Make sure the route is open for sledding. Inform yourself about the course and condition of the sled run.
3) Use good equipment: quality sled, protective helmet, sturdy footwear
For safety reasons, no plastic bobs or plastic bases.
4) Ascend on the right and one behind the other
Cross the sled run only at clearly visible places.
5) Drive controlled, in sight and keep distance
Adjust speed and driving style to your ability, the sled run, snow, ice, weather conditions, and traffic density.
6) Make yourself noticeable
Warn inattentive ascenders (bells, loud shouting). In the dark: headlamp and reflective clothing.
7) Wait at visible spots for your companions
Make sure your group is complete. Never stop at tight and unclear spots.
8) Sledding on ski slopes is dangerous and prohibited
The collision risk with skiers is high. Frozen sled tracks at night impair the quality of the slopes.
9) No dogs
Dogs are difficult to control on the ascent and descent, and there is a high collision risk with descending sledders on the often narrow sled runs.
10) No impairment through alcohol or medication
Addictive substances impair reaction and reduce correct hazard assessment.
Also when sledding: provide first aid and identify yourself in case of accidents.
