The hike starts at Steinerhütte, a popular starting point in the region. From here, the well-marked path initially leads through dense forests that provide pleasant shade in summer. The trail is varied and repeatedly offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountain landscape.
After about an hour, you reach a picturesque alpine meadow section, perfect for a short rest. Here you can enjoy the tranquility of nature and gather strength for the further ascent.
The path to Großer Sauofen now becomes somewhat steeper and rockier, requiring surefootedness. However, the effort is worthwhile: at the summit, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking panorama. The view spans the entire Carinthian mountain world and makes hikers' hearts beat faster.
After a well-deserved break and signing the summit book, return the same way back to Steinerhütte.
At the Steinerhütte parking lot, turn northeast and follow the signposts towards Großer Sauofen. On a forest path, ascend with a gentle incline until you cross a clearing. The climb continues through the forest until you finally cross the tree line. Here, the view opens up to the valley and across the central Carinthian mountain landscape. Now follows the last, somewhat steeper climb to Großer Sauofen. At the summit cross, you can take a well-deserved break before returning the same way back to Steinerhütte.
