From the Kölnbrein reservoir in the Malta Valley to the Kattowitzer Hut

We walk along Salzgitter Trail No. 545 level through dwarf pine thickets downhill and after about an hour eastwards in switchbacks into the swampy ground of the Krumpenkar (2,027m). Further eastwards, up a slope and into a blocky debris at the foot of the Marschneid, the ridge descending from the Großer Hafner. In switchbacks over a saddle to the other side of the ridge, where the path levels out again, and through dwarf pine-covered slopes to the Kattowitzer Hut.

On path No. 547 we hike steadily uphill, through scree, rubble, and snow tongues. Path No. 549 branches off to the right, which leads over the Lanisch Saddle into the Pöll Valley; but we stay on path No. 547, keep slightly left and reach a saddle on the southwest ridge and over the initially narrow ridge slowly but surely to the summit. However, the way back is still long! One last look into the dark shimmering "abysses", then we start the descent on the already known path back to the Kattowitzer Hut and into the Malta Valley.

Hiking time: approx. 7 hours from the Kölnbrein reservoir.

You also have the option to stay overnight at the Kattowitzer Hut and climb the summit the next morning. Only for climbers experienced in rock climbing with appropriate equipment, fitness, and endurance!

In the summer season (end of May - mid-October) the public bus runs to the Kölnbrein dam (partly with minibuses with 8 seats. For groups of five or more persons, advance booking is required by 5 pm the day before at Tel. +43 (0) 4732 37175!)
