Schwabenkinder
Experience a gripping drama about hardship, deprivation, and a mother’s love that knows no bounds.
Until the 1950s, the Lechtal was one of the poorest regions in Tyrol. The yield from its barren agriculture was not enough for many large families to survive. As a result, men—and especially many children—had no choice but to leave the valley and work in “Swabia,” often under very harsh conditions, in order to support their families with their meagre earnings.
Premiered 30 years ago, the play tells the story of a Lechtal family, representing many struggling families throughout Tyrol around 1900.
Unable to provide for its inhabitants, the Lechtal forced desperate parents to send their children away year after year to work abroad. The story portrays the moral dilemma of a mother who receives an adoption request for her child from Swabia. She must decide whether to give up her child—offering them prosperity and a good education—or to bring them back into poverty.
