Although it does not start directly from Bormio, the Mortirolo Pass (here in its more panoramic version from Grosio) is a must for those tackling the challenges of the Stelvio Epic Rides. With a length of about 12.5 km and an elevation gain of about 1300 meters, it features average gradients above 10% and stretches that exceed 18%. It is a short but very intense climb, a real "wall" that tests physical and mental endurance, but that offers an indescribable feeling of victory upon reaching the top.
Easier side, but not too much, to reach the Mortirolo Pass. It certainly offers an extraordinary VIEW, with typical alpine pasture areas, meadows and characteristic huts. It lives on reflected glory, but in any case represents a valid alternative for those who consider the real Mortirolo too difficult. In the last three kilometers the road overlaps the mythical route.
Bormio - Grosio (Vernuga junction) - Mortirolo Pass
Road Bikes: Climber gears are essential (single chainring 34-30 at the front or compact double with 32/34/36 cassette at the rear). Think 34x32 or even easier.
MTB/Gravel: With their ability to overcome extreme slopes and greater grip, they are an excellent choice for the Mortirolo, making it more "rideable".
E-bike: Allows you to tackle this legendary climb without the suffering that made the Mortirolo famous. A great option for those who want to experience it but don’t have the legs for the "muscular" version.
Clothing: Light and breathable for the climb, but with a vest or windproof jacket for the descent.

Rhythm: Find a steady rhythm and don't force it. The gradients are brutal and a management mistake can be costly.
Recovery: Don’t be ashamed to take short breaks if necessary. The climb is very selective.
Descent: The descent towards Aprica or Edolo requires a lot of attention due to steep gradients and tight hairpins. Check the brakes carefully before starting.
Shade: Much of the climb is immersed in the woods, which can be an advantage on hot days but also an obstacle for visibility in some points.
Pantani Signs: Look for signs with Marco Pantani's phrases along the climb: they will give you the right motivation.
Choose the right gears! You will need agile developments to tackle the forbidding gradients. Don't get discouraged, the Mortirolo is a climb won with the mind before the legs. And remember the names of the great champions engraved on the asphalt: they will give you the right inspiration.
