It was built between the slopes of the Vigne and Soudeillette streams on a rocky escarpment, one of the most important and impregnable castles.
The Ventadour fief, which extends from the east of lower Limousin to the west of Auvergne, developed in the 12th century a new form of lyrical expression: the Troubar art. It became a reference in all European courts.

From the church, pass in front of the town hall, go down the D124 and, at the granite cross set into a wall, turn left towards the housing estate. Continue along the descending path, cross the bridge over the Vigne stream, leave the path on the left and go up. Cross the D991 and enter the path on the left. It rises in the beech forest of Puy Dru. On the plateau, continue to the left.
Take the road to the right, then turn onto the path on the left. Continue on the road to the left and go straight through the hamlet of Bouyges (the last house on the left shows, on a window lintel, an unexpected bas-relief representing two animals facing each other, possibly hares). Continue straight along the path, at the fork turn right then, at the second fork, turn left, and start the descent into the gorges. At the edge of the plateau, 100 m after the second left fork, you can access a viewpoint over the Soudeillette valley and the rocky spur where the Ventadour fortress stands. Continue the descent, which becomes very steep along the quarry (caution), and reach the parking lot at the Bouyges bridge.
Cross the D991, go around the barn on the left and cross the meadow. Cross the footbridge spanning the Soudeillette, at the confluence with the Luzège, and continue along the path entering the oak forest of Bois du Claux. At the intersection, take the hollow way to the left and continue climbing. Take the track to the left, then the road to the left and cross the Roudal bridge.
Climb the road on the right along the escarpment (which once protected the castle) and arrive at a junction at the top of the hill. On the left stands the Ventadour castle, home of Bernard de Ventadour, one of the most famous troubadours.
Continue on the road. It leads to La Chanselve, then to Moustier-Ventadour. Turn left to return to the starting point.
